Acklin Pledges Volunteerism, Calls on Pittsburghers to Join In Neighborhood Support
Independent mayoral candidate proposes new city backed volunteerism program

PITTSBURGH - At a press conference in front of the Brookline Cannon, Independent Mayoral Candidate Kevin Acklin today announced his plans for the creation of a city backed volunteerism program called The Pittsburgh Pride Corps. The progam, which he would launch should he be elected Mayor on Tuesday, would, according to Acklin, "lead clean-ups, plantings, park projects, and any kind of neighborhood improvement we need in the City of Pittsburgh.”  The program would be modeled after the Independent candidate's own volunteerism organization, Renew Pittsburgh.

"[This] kind of volunteerism and coordinated, community-oriented problem solving is what we need to protect our neighborhoods and make them attractive destinations for young families," said Acklin. "That’s a reality I saw first-hand in my work with Renew Pittsburgh, and it’s one of the most important reasons why I’m running for Mayor."

Acklin proposes funding the program by soliciting donations from the corporate and non-profit community, a tactic that he has used to fund operations for Renew Pittsburgh.

The Mayoral candidate also made an appeal to Pittsburghers to join his campaign for Mayor.  In the closing days of the election, the campaign has continued to focus on a positive, issues-oriented message, with Acklin pledging, "This is the type of Mayor I will be. I’ll reach out, I’ll lead by example, and I’ll inspire people to participate in their neighborhoods and in their city government."

Previously in his campaign, Acklin has proposed numerous policy ideas, including a solution to the pension problem, a comprehensive plan to combat abandoned housing, ethics reforms, a plan to put additional police officers on the streets, and a neighborhood investment plan.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd.
